5 Fun Fall Folly Beach Activities
Just because it’s fall and the temperatures are cooling off, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Folly Beach. If you truly want to appreciate all that Folly Beach has to offer, fall is a great time to do just that. Here are five fun fall Folly Beach activities.
Surfing
Obviously, surfing is our number one fall activity. What better way to enjoy the sunshine, cooler temperatures, and no crowds, than a day spent catching some waves? You’ll have the ocean mostly to yourself, so you don’t have to worry about bumping into others or others crashing your set.
You’ll also catch some of the best swells of the year during the fall, as hurricane season continues to push storms along the coast. You’ll want to be careful if you do surf during this time, as the rip tides and currents can be strong. Be sure to check the surf forecast, especially if you are a newer surfer.
You’ll also want to pack a light wetsuit if you do plan on surfing during the fall months. Water temperatures are currently around 70 degrees, so you may not need one at the moment, but you will later on in the season. You’ll also want to pack all the other usual surf gear, including sunscreen and water. Just because it is slightly cooler out, doesn’t mean you aren’t susceptible to the elements.
Yoga
Let’s admit it, 2020 has been stressful! Pandemics, elections, and hurricanes can cause excess stress and anxiety in anyone’s life. Why not unwind with a sunrise or sunset yoga session on the beach? Take in the serene sounds of the waves crashing on shore while inhaling and exhaling the salty air.
You won’t have to fight for parking or deal with other stresses that come with a beach trip during peak season. With plenty of space and privacy for you to spread out, you can stroll up to the beach with yoga mat in hand and hopefully be able to fully relax and unwind.
Reading
If yoga isn’t your thing and you still want to enjoy some quiet, alone time, why not grab a good book and your beach chair? With the cooler temperatures, you can enjoy an afternoon on the beach with your favorite book in hand, without being uncomfortably drenched in sweat.
A few of our favorite beach reads to enjoy include:
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy
My Losing Season by Pat Conroy (Pat Conroy is a Lowcountry legend!)
Folly Beach by Dorthea Benton Frank (we had to throw this one on the list!)
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid
Walking
If you are looking for low impact exercise, consider a long beach walk. Take off your shoes and enjoy the sand between your toes. You can even bring your furry friend along. Dogs are allowed on Folly Beach from October 1-April 30, but they must stay on a leash. If you do bring your dog along, be sure to bring bags to clean up after them.
Beach Picnic
If you are looking for a fun beach activity with kids or your romantic partner, consider a beach picnic. As mentioned previously, the crowds will be low, or potentially non existent, giving you ample space to bring a blanket and spread out.
A few things to remember if you want to have a beach picnic
Glass is prohibited from the beach
Alcohol is prohibited from the beach
Be considerate and clean up after yourself
You can even grab food from a local Folly restaurant or business. Some of our favorites include:
Berts Mart (grab a sandwich or hotdog)
Just because summer is over, doesn’t mean beach season is over. Fall is the perfect time to kick back, relax, and truly enjoy all that Folly Beach has to offer!
