Charleston: an east coast surfing hot spot

When you think of the south east and in particular Charleston, most people envision beautiful architecture, historic sites, delicious food, and beautiful weather. The city and region doesn’t scream surf mecca, but the reality is, Charleston has so many characteristics that make it a surfing hotspot. The weather is great year round and the ocean temperature stays mild year round. Although we rarely see big or world class surf, we are blessed with consistent wind-swell and there is typically always a wave to ride. Access to the beach is also very convenient. We have multiple beaches (Folly Beach, Sullivans Beach, Isle of Palms) within a 20 minute drive from downtown Charleston. Surfing before or after work is a breeze. All of these things make Charleston an ideal city to be a surfer or to start your surfing journey.

That’s where we come in. Isla Surf School is Charleston’s premier water sports company with an emphasis on surf lessons and surf camp. We teach all lessons and programs on Folly Beach. Folly Beach is the most consistent and arguably the best wave in South Carolina. It doesn’t hurt its a 15 minute drive to downtown either. We operate out of 3rd West Street on Folly where we have a great sandbar most years that breaks through all tides, which is a rarity for east coast beach breaks. We may be bias because Charleston is our home and truly one of the best cities on earth, but we are firm believers that is is a perfect place to try surfing, improve your surfing, or chase your life long surfing dreams. It has something for everyone.
